Research software

The following cetacean research software is made available through Marine Conservation Research Ltd. courtesy of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). IFAW’s mission is to improve the welfare of wild and domestic animals throughout the world by reducing commercial exploitation of animals, protecting wildlife habitats and assisting animals in distress. IFAW seek to motivate the public to prevent cruelty to animals and to promote animal welfare and conservation policies that advance the wellbeing of both animals and people.

Logger 2010 is an automatic field data logging program which automatically collects data from GPS and other ships instruments and stores it in an Access database. Using Logger, it is also possible to design any number of forms for manual input of data.

RainbowClick is a program designed for the detection and analysis of sounds made by sperm whales and other odontocetes

IFAW promotes the use of benign (non-invasive) research techniques for the study of animals and believes that improved knowledge of animals and their environment helps to both better understand threats to individual animals, populations and their habitats, and may also be used to mitigate against those threats.

Researchers are welcome to use this software free of charge, on the understanding that neither the conduct or objectives of the research conflict with the aims of IFAW as described above.

Appropriate acknowledgement for the use of the software should be made in reports and published papers. A suitable acknowledgement might read:

‘These data were collected using software (Logger 2010, and/or Rainbow Click* delete as appropriate) developed by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to promote benign and non-invasive research.

No suggestion to the effect that IFAW supports the work should be made unless the work has been carried out in direct collaboration with IFAW scientists and prior approval has been obtained.

IFAW and MCR requests copies of all reports and papers which acknowledge use of the software for our records. These should be mailed to Marine Conservation Research Ltd, 1 High Street, Kelvedon, Colchester, Essex CO5 9AG, UK or emailed to info@mcr-team.co.uk
